Broadbeach Supports Burma Relief Mission

Monday 19th May 2008

Broadbeach Alliance is getting behind the relief mission for Burma, where approximately 100,000
people are feared dead and at least 1.5 million have been left homeless by the cyclone which hit more
than a week ago.

With the annual free music festival Blues on Broadbeach running from Thursday the 29th of May up until
and including Sunday the 1st of June the organisers see this as a great opportunity to get behind a
worthwhile cause.

Broadbeach Alliance CEO Jan McCormick believes this is the perfect opportunity to give a little bit back
on an international level.

“The tragedy overseas is unimaginable and the team decided we needed to do something to help.”
Broadbeach Alliance has joined forces with the Red Cross who will have volunteers on the entry gates at
the Blues on Broadbeach Music Festival on Sunday the 1st of June.

“The Red Cross does such an amazing job on local, national and international levels and it is wonderful
that whatever people decide to donate is going directly to the people who need it the most.”

The Blues on Broadbeach Music Festival is a free event with no ticketing and no admission charge so
Broadbeach Alliance are asking everyone to reach into their pockets and put whatever they can spare
into the tins.

The situation in Myanmar's cyclone-devastated Irrawaddy delta is 'overwhelming' according to the
International Red Cross' head of delegation in Myanmar, Australian aid worker Bridget Gardner.

'The town of Labutta is unrecognisable,' she said. 'I have been there before, and now - with the extent of
the damage and the crowds of displaced people - it is a different place.'

More Red Cross relief supplies are moving into Myanmar, with 10 flights having reached Yangon in the
last few days. Over 35 tonnes of supplies have been delivered into the capital.

These flights represent only the beginning of what will be a massive logistical operation but, after initial
concerns, a rhythm is being found for aid delivery for people affected by Cyclone Nargis.

It is expected that by the end of this week 17 flights, carrying a total of 130 tonnes of aid will have been
dispatched from around the region.

The flights will deliver mosquito nets, tarpaulins, hygiene items and jerry cans as well as emergency
shelter supplies for thousands of people. Australian aid workers continue to take the lead in coordinating
the response.
