Accomplished New Zealand guitarist, and now Gold Coast based singer-songwriter Matthew Armitage has an old soul air about him. Deft guitar work conjures up sounds reminiscent of artists like Shakey Graves, Muddy Waters and JJ Cale. After paying his dues in the 00’s with numerous Wellington bands, playing a number of NZ tours and small relocations to Berlin and New York, Armitage then moved to Australia in 2013 following love and adventure. At this time of change he forged a unique solo sound using the mellow-toned nylon guitar from childhood, and inspired by the sub-tropical beach paradise he found himself in began regularly busking and gigging in Byron Bay and the Gold Coast. His first solo album New Tide from 2018 was meet with wide praise and took him on a national tour with Pete Murray, opening sets for Bernard Fanning. Electric guitar focused bands Chesta Hedron and The Swamps also keep Armitage constantly evolving, colaborating and creating.
