Blues on Broadbeach Music Festival welcomes folksy blues and roots singer-songwriter Matthew Armitage for the first time in 2020!
On his 2018 solo album, New Tide, his acoustic guitar sounds like a South Pacific blues band, his foot stomp is a modified cajon drum with a 60’s tambourine, and his voice is steeped in the blues tradition.
Previously based in Wellington NZ, Matthew was deeply involved in the music scene as an electric guitarist, bass player and teacher. A member of many bands, he became a musician’s musician with an affection for old school styles and sounds, landing gigs such as playing guitar for rock’n’roll legend Wanda Jackson.
Now living in Tweed Heads NSW, he has played at the busking stage at Byron Bay Blues Festival in 2014, Margot Robbie’s wedding in 2016, The Falls festival in 2019, and heavy riffed out instrumental psychedelic rock band Chesta Hedron who played for Angus Stone’s 30th birthday party. In 2018 after the release of the debut album New Tide, Armitage hit the road in support of Pete Murray on his 30-date tour of Australia.
2020 will see the release of a new EP of material centred around the electric guitar, vocals and drums.
The B Side Agency says – “In the genre of classic American “Rhythm N Blues”, or what later became “Rock N Roll” in the 50’s, Matthew Armitage has nailed it. If Dick Dale, Chuck Berry, and Howlin Wolf were reincarnated as a studied multi-instrumentalist kiwi, you would get Matthew Armitage.
