Returning to Blues on Broadbeach Music Festival in 2020 is Mike Beale whose amazing guitar skills and energy captivates audiences all over the world.

Originally hailing from Canada, Mike came to Australia when he was ten years old. Mike says – “My interest in music started at about age 13 listening to America and Crosby Stills and Nash and hearing the big acoustic guitar sounds and harmony. Soon I bought an acoustic guitar and was very much the usual guitar geek – locked in the bedroom trying to learn everything. I learned all the tunes off the first America album. I was impressed by the use of different guitar parts in their songs.” Mike’s blues roots music was also influenced by British Rock bands including the Small Faces, The Yardbirds and Jeff Beck who transferred Afro-American blues to the British Rock scene.

He is no stranger to the blues, having been in mid-2000s power blues trio, Men In Blues. He wrote many songs in a heavy Robben Ford style and the trio released multiple records with chart success in Europe. Men in Blues played many festivals like the Australian Blues Festival NSW, Bridgetown Blues WA, Gympie Muster QLD, and our very own Blues on Broadbeach QLD. Their albums include Drinking Overnight and Battered and Bruised. Mike’s original song ‘Lost’ was the number one requested song on Belgium’s Midnight Blues Radio.

Mike does most of his songwriting on a Martin D28 guitar that he acquired in 1983. He says this has been a ‘perpetual feature’ of his musical life and has been by his side through thick and thin, having made it through robberies, being lost on a planes, and a world of travelling.

Mike continues to have an active and dynamic solo music career, but he has also worked with vocalist KNiKi from Perth, WA. Together they have formed The KNiKi + Mike Beale Project, released two albums, and toured both nationally and internationally.
