Considered by some as the best musicians that Memphis has ever produced, Hi Rhythm Section was constructed around three talented brothers by Hi Records producer Willie Mitchell during the late 1960s. As the house band for the label, Hi Rhythm Section played across hit soul albums by several artists including Al Green and Ann Peebles. Comprised of Mabon Hodges (guitarist), Leroy Hodges (bassist), Charles Hodges (organist), Howard Grimes (drummer), and Archie Turner (pianist), the band has played on 26 consecutive gold and platinum records and countless chart hits.

Singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Lina Beach joined the band in 2023 and will join them at Blues on Broadbeach 2024. Finding her home and sound in Memphis, Lina caught the attention of Grammy award winning producer Boo Mitchell in 2021. After offering to produce her first album, Boo introduced Lina to some of Memphis’ finest musicians and legends, with Hi Rhythm Section appearing on her record. She now travels the world with them as part of the band.

Also accompanying the band for their Blues on Broadbeach appearance is much loved Memphis performer Jerome Chism. Known for getting people on their feet, Jerome’s church upbringing is evident in his soulful vocals which are a true representation of Memphis music. His strong, raspy vocals cover the best of the soul genre, including all the greats of Hi Rhythm’s musical history.

Produced by Boo Mitchell, Take Me to the River is a 2014 documentary celebrating the intergenerational and interracial musical influence of Memphis, in the face of pervasive discrimination and segregation. The critically acclaimed documentary brings together multiple generations of award-winning Memphis musicians and follows the creative process of recording a historic new album. The film re-imagines the utopia of the racial, gender and generational collaboration of Memphis in its heyday and has become a critically acclaimed documentary.
