Festival Director Mark Duckworth can’t wait for the return of live music to the Gold Coast.

“It was fantastic news for the Blues on Broadbeach’s COVID Safe Plan to be given the tick of approval, as the planning for 2021 has been a totally new experience for us. It is a credit to the whole team. We had so much support from the fans and artists to keep at it. We’re so excited to share it with you.  I know it’s going to be a special event.”

With the support of the Restart Investment to Sustain and Expand (RISE) Fund – an Australian Government initiative, the event will return safely for attendees and artists, featuring a combination of park stages, Dine & Watch precincts and partnered venues.

The festival’s program promises an incredible and diverse display of performances ranging from Blues and Roots to Folk and Rock.

Australian singer-songwriter and guitarist Lloyd Spiegel is among the first acts performing, with the first of his two shows on Thursday the 20th from 5:00pm.

He returns the next evening, along with the “Jimi Hendrix of the Hammond Organ” Lachy Doley and The Horns of Conviction. As well as Melbourne outfit Jazz Party, and blues rock guitarist Hamish Anderson.

Saturday the 22nd vows to be a spectacular evening, with West Aussie rock juggernaut The Southern River Band performing at 5:15pm as the perfect pre-cursor to Aussie rock icons and headline act Wolfmother (pictured below), with the legends who brought you “Joker and the Thief” showcasing their electric talent at 8:45pm.

The last day of the festival on Sunday the 23rd is shaping up to be a more relaxing, yet no less riveting day in Broadbeach. Sydney Blues guitarist and vocalist Ray Beadle, fresh from his first performance the evening before, will be returning to stage at 3:30pm, followed by the idiosyncratic C.W. Stoneking, with the blues marvel performing at 5:15pm.

And finally, what better way to conclude a truly exceptional weekend than to spend the evening with the vibrant and gorgeous Christine Anu (pictured right), performing the Aretha Franklin Songbook from 7:00pm.

The icing on the cake, or rather, the froth on top of the festival, has also been locked in.  Blues on Broadbeach is excited to announce a terrific new partnership with Wingman Beer! The official beer of Blues on Broadbeach 2021, will be providing limited edition ‘Blues on Broadbeach’ Wingman Beer cans on sale at the festival, including in their pop-up bars in the festival precinct.

Will Chambers, General Manager – Wingman Beer said:

“We are thrilled to be announced as the Official Beer of Blues on Broadbeach. Like most people, we have eagerly anticipated the return of live entertainment, and to celebrate Wingman Beer’s first foray into supporting the music industry, we are excited to launch a limited edition can of the Wingman 3.5% mid-strength beer, which will be available to patrons at the Wingman Bars in Kurrawa Park and Victoria Park.  Having relocated the business from NSW to South East Queensland in mid-2020, we are keen to build partnerships and support initiatives which drive visitation to the Gold Coast, and we will be showcasing the new Blues on Broadbeach can at events in NSW in the coming weeks.”

Blues on Broadbeach 2021 is also delighted to reveal a new partnership with mental health and wellbeing support organisation, Beyond Blue.

With the enduring impact of the pandemic, the need for mental health and wellbeing support is more important than ever. In this time of uncertainty, Blues on Broadbeach and Beyond Blue hope their partnership can help to alleviate and combat anxiety, depression, and other related mental health concerns.

Andrew Stockdale, singer and guitarist of headline act and Australian rock icon Wolfmother, expressed his optimism for the power of music and connection in nurturing wellbeing:

“The past year has been very tough on everyone and I know so many people in the music industry who have really struggled financially and mentally due to COVID. It’s great to finally be able to come together again as performers and fans to celebrate at a live festival, Musc is a powerful force for connection, and it can lift our spirits in challenging times. As a performer, creating music and sharing it with others is a big release and having this outlet is an important way I keep on top of my own wellbeing.”

Beyond Blue CEO Georgie Harman welcomed the new partnership and acknowledged the important role music plays in our lives.

“If the last year has taught us anything, it’s the importance of music and the events that bring us together. That’s why we’re so excited about this partnership as we start to open up and reconnect. I want to thank Blues on Broadbeach for this partnership and for encouraging music fans, performers and staff to make mental health a part of everyday conversations.”

In addition to Beyond Blue, Blues on Broadbeach is grateful for their sensational sponsors, The Oracle Boulevard and Network Ten.

The luxurious boulevard at the Oracle precinct will be closed to vehicles all weekend as they present a solid program of blues entertainment in the ‘round on Oracle Boulevard. Forming part of 2021 Blues on Broadbeach “Dine & Watch precinct” offering, fans can book into their favourite Oracle Boulevard restaurants and bars and kick back to some of the best blues musicians in the country.

Network Ten were due to commence a two-year deal with Blues on Broadbeach in 2020, prior to the cancellation of the festival due to COVID. However, after a buoyant year, they are back in 2021, ready to promote their popular shows; MasterChef, Have You Been Paying Attention, Survivor Australia and more, in association with Blues on Broadbeach.

Blues on Broadbeach is supported by the Queensland Government via Tourism and Events Queensland and is a feature on the It’s Live! in Queensland events calendar.

The Beautiful Girls are coming to Broadbeach

Blues on Broadbeach is thrilled to announce that The Beautiful Girls are coming to Broadbeach and joining us as the prelude act to Wolfmother, performing at 7:00 pm on Saturday, May 22nd on the Kurruwa Park Stage!

But don’t be fooled by the band name, The Beautiful Girls operate as more of a collective. In fact, they’re not even girls! Similarly to the likes of Kevin Parker’s psychedelic project Tame Impala, The Beautiful Girls’ music is created by Mat McHugh, with various musicians joining him depending on what he’s writing at the time.

His diverse and groovy sounds are grounded in Roots but inspired by a range of genres, including Dub, Reggae and Folk, with a dash of punk rock spirit on the side. Just enough to whet the audience’s appetite before headline act Wolfmother rock the stage.

We can’t wait to see The Beautiful Girls.

In other news, our friends from across the Tasman, Kiwi reggae roots outfit The Black Seeds are no longer able to perform at Blues on Broadbeach 2021 due to the challenging logistics of arranging travel under these COVID-impacted times, but we hope to see them at our festival in the future.

Second Lineup Announcement

It seems like just yesterday we proudly announced the return of the mighty Blues on Broadbeach, and now that the date is approaching fast, we are keen to share the second lineup for our May 20-23, 2021 festival.

And yes, that means a second line-up announcement, which will include for the first time at Blues on Broadbeach, ARIA and Grammy Award-winning rock icons Wolfmother. No strangers to big festivals, having performed at Coachella and Lollapalooza, they are a huge addition to a line-up already brimming with talent.

Another first-timer is ARIA Award-winning C.W Stoneking, who hails from Katherine, NT.  C.W. takes blues all the way back to its roots with a 1920’s pre-war jive and a jazzy New Orleans twist.  With someone like Stoneking performing, the blues will truly be alive in Broadbeach in May!

Major Events Gold Coast is super excited to announce the second line-up of artists joining the already amazing program which includes the likes of Tommy Emmanuel, NZ’s The Black Seeds and Christine Anu.

 Festival Director, Mark Duckworth says,

“The second round of artists coming to the festival in May will make for another memorable year. As a music lover, the best thing about Blues on Broadbeach is the multiple styles of music we get to present, all stemming back to the original blues sound.”

For those that know Blues on Broadbeach, they would know Ray Beadle, Lloyd Spiegel, and Fiona Boyes.

Beadle is the genuine article, playing guitar from his heart and soul since the age of nine, learning from the greats and carving out his name through his exhilarating live sessions!  The festival fave is looking forward to returning to his beloved Blues on Broadbeach.

Spiegel has been touring since the age of 12, having played alongside greats such as Ray Charles, Bob Dylan, and Etta James. His talent has placed him in the Australian Guitar Magazine’s top 50 guitarists of all time.

“After the madness of 2020, I can’t think of a better way to return to music than performing at Blues on Broadbeach.” Lloyd Spiegel claims, “It’s an event that truly represents and embraces the Australian blues community, and now — more than ever — that community needs a chance to come together, relaunch and move forward. I’m so looking forward to seeing this amazing FREE showcase of Australian blues talent back in full swing.”

Boyes has been described as soulful, authoritative, and a ‘musical anomaly’. As a repeat-nominee at the Memphis Blues Music Awards, Fiona is taking her slide-guitar styles from the heart of Louisiana to the international scene with her band The Fortune Tellers.

The sunshine state is proving to be Australia’s destination of the year and the Gold Coast is the veritable jewel in the crown.  Organisers suggest getting in quick with your flights and accommodation.

Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate added:

“There is only one word needed to describe the line-up for Blues in 2021 – amazing!’’ touted  “I’m not sure I’ve got the energy to go all night with Wolfmother, but I’ll definitely be front-of-stage when C.W. Stoneking showcases the blues from the 1920s. I encourage anyone who has not been to a Blues weekend in our city to blank out the dates now – and book their accommodation.”

What fantastic news and what a line-up for 2021. Since lockdown, I’ve been dying to get amongst some great blues music, so with Tommy heading down under, I can see a record crowd milling around the main stages at Broadbeach

Revered as the best acoustic guitarist in the world, Nashville based Tommy Emmanuel is a man that has achieved enough musical milestones to last a lifetime. In 2021, he is returning home with a fresh album under his belt to perform exclusively at Blues on Broadbeach.

Here’s what Tommy had to say about the festival.

I am really looking forward to playing Blues on Broadbeach May 2021! My late brother Phil had played the festival and raved about it. I am very honoured to be asked and will give my absolute best to the fans!!! See you in May, Australia!! Love — Tommy

With one of the most enduring and recognisable voices in Australia, the multi-faceted icon and ARIA award-winning artist Christine Anu will be stylin’ up the festival stage and tipping her hat to the Queen of Soul in a must-see performance packed with heartfelt interpretations of Aretha Franklin’s most memorable hits. The critically acclaimed Aretha Franklin Songbook is a show unlike any other and will be performed exclusively at Blues on Broadbeach.

Roots-legends overseas and a household name in New Zealand, The Black Seeds have come from humble beginnings, and since 1998 they have continued to push the boundaries of Reggae-fusion without compromising the music’s heart; bringing raw energy, good vibes, and bass-heavy sounds wherever they go. Alongside bands like Fat Freddy’s Drop and Katchafire, the multi-platinum selling band have earned a reputation for rocking dancefloors around the world. This is a special year for them as they will be releasing new music and performing in Australia for Blues on Broadbeach exclusively.

Sydney’s energetic and ferocious blues/soul powerhouse The Lachy Doley Group are a must-see for anyone, topping charts and electrifying crowds around the world with their iconic sound. This year they will be returning to Blues on Broadbeach with some very special surprises to be announced later.

We thought there’s no better way to enjoy this digital version of our festival, than pairing it with a serving of authentic southern-style cocktails at home.

Top 5 drinks to get your Bandwidth live streaming party started

Recommended by our friends at Memphis Tourism, here are the Top 5 cocktails that have an authentic taste of the Mississipi Delta, complete with links to the recipes

1.Mint Julep
Nothing pairs better with the quintessentially Memphis ribs than the Mint Julep. Fresh mint, maple syrup and bourbon form what is the signature cocktail of the Kentucky Derby. Tonight, with Bandwidth, we’ll be swapping out the horses for guitars. Try this awesome recipe from liquor.com

2.Sazerac
Sazerac…the official drink of New Orleans. No, but seriously, in 2008 legislation passed that named this to be true. Feel like a New Orleans local in no time with this mix of absinthe, Peychaud’s butters, angostura bitters, whisky, a sugar cube, and lemon. View the recipe here from liquor.com

3.Mississippi Punch
As a nod to the father of American mixology, Jerry Thomas, you better pour a glass of his Mississippi Punch. This combination of cognac, bourbon, rum, lemon, and sugar is sure to get your Bandwidth house party started. Get the recipe here from Esquire

4.Hurricane Cocktail
Prepare your tastebuds for this sweet n sour treat, the Southern Hurricane (pictured above). Use one hand to stir together rum, grenadine, passionfruit, lime and orange juice, while clicking your fingers along to the blues. The full recipe is available here, with compliments of The Southern Kitchen

5.Southern Sweet Iced Tea
So far these drinks sound like a hoot but if you want to keep this music extravaganza kid-friendly, Southern Sweet Iced Tea is the perfect non-alcoholic choice!  Try this recipe from food.com

“The idea that Blues on Broadbeach would not make its annual appearance on the Gold Coast in 2020 was a shock to us all,” said Duckworth. “As we informed the artists and fans, the idea that we could band together to do something virtual immediately followed.

“Bandwidth is an online meeting point for our festival tribe, a celebration of our event and a snapshot of musicians working from home around the globe. It’s a non-traditional concert experience that we can provide for our audience to enjoy. Turn on, tune in, drop out.”

Recommended by our friends at Memphis Tourism, here are the Top 5 finger-licking meals direct from the Mississipi Delta.

1. Slow-Cooker Memphis-Style Ribs
There is nothing more quintessentially Memphis than these tender slow-cooker Memphis-style ribs.  Try making them at home with this recipe by Taste of Home. A little tip… move those napkins to the side because this recipe’s sweet and succulent sauce is so finger-licking good you won’t want to miss a drop.

2. Memphis Dry-Rubber Back Ribs
Many southerners believe that the most traditional way to prepare ribs is with the tangy texture and flavour of a dry rub. If you sit on the dry side of town in this age-old debate of ribs finished with a rub versus finished with a sauce, we have The Food Network recipe for you.

3.Memphis Dry Rub, Rendezvous-Style
In Memphis, barbequing is seen as an art form, and any Memphis Michelangelo knows their ribs should be painted with a palate of tantalising herbs and spices. Enjoy all the Memphis flavours with this mouth-watering Memphis Dry Rub Recipe Rendezvous Style from Amazing Ribs

4. Gus’ Fried Chicken Recipe
One southern staple that the whole family is bound to enjoy is this delicious duplication of Gus’ World Famous Fried Chicken which is a Tennessee food chain. The chicken’s golden coating will create a crunch and crackle so satisfying that Tommy Emmanuel will want to take you on tour as his personal chef.  We recommend the Bitten Word recipe

5. Memphis-Style Catfish
Another popular Tennessee meal is this tasty Memphis-style catfish which has the perfect amount of spice to satisfy adventurous taste buds. Its yummy remoulade sauce, crispy crust and tender fish makes it the ideal dish to enjoy while singing along to your favourite blues artists.  Try the Food Network recipe

So you see that whilst we’re all unable to travel to Memphis right now, we can still experience the southern city’s wonderful food scene.

In uncertain times, it’s a way for Blues on Broadbeach to forge ahead and give self-isolating music fans around the world a chance to join the party.

Blues on Broadbeach to forge ahead

With a music career spanning five decades, TOMMY EMMANUEL plays at hundreds of sold-out shows around the world each year and impresses audiences with his emotional, authentic, and energetic performances. Not only is Tommy a national treasure, he was recently ranked THE greatest acoustic guitarist in the world today.

Some festival favourites return

Auckland-based (via Canada) TAMI NEILSON is set to once again impress fans after blowing audiences away at last year’s Blues on Broadbeach. Described as a “fire-breathing belter” by Rolling Stone, new fans will be super impressed by Tami’s voice which comes straight from the golden age of soul, country and rockabilly music. Her incredible singing and songwriting have seen her win the ‘2014 APRA Silver Scroll Award’ as well as ‘Best Female Artist’ at the New Zealand Country Music Awards in 2010, 2011 and 2014.

“The best way to get rid of the blues is to sing the blues, so, I’m looking forward to joining you all online, with my brother Jay Neilson beaming in from Toronto to join me for a special set we’ve cooked up just for you!” said Tami Neilson.

High energy festival favourite, THE LACHY DOLEY GROUP, has performed at over 200 concerts and festivals around the world, including several shows at Blues on Broadbeach over the years. Lachy Doley is the most celebrated Blues Soul Rock Organ Player in the world, hailed by Glenn Hughes from Deep Purple as ‘the greatest living keyboard player in the world today’. Tune in to see Lachy Doley’s electrifying 2016 Blues on Broadbeach performance.

“These are crazy times… and to musicians and live music lovers these important restrictions have taken away a piece of our heart, culture and livelihood,” said Lachy Doley. “I’m thrilled that Blues on Broadbeach have decided to bring the festival into our homes.

“Alongside the incredible line-up from what was to be this year’s ‘Blues on Broadbeach’ festival, I’m stoked to have my 2016 Blues on Broadbeach concert aired as part of this great initiative.

“I love this festival and it’s incredible loyal audience that I get to catch up with whenever I’m there. This performance was one of the most career-changing events in my life and I hope you enjoy it as much this time around.”

Festival Director Mark Duckworth says Bandwidth provides a fascinating way for fans to connect with some of their favourite artists through an online platform.

Tourism Industry Development Minister Kate Jones welcomed today’s announcement.

“For years we’ve worked with organisers to build this event up to be one of Australia’s marquee music festivals. It would have been heartbreaking to have the event fall to the wayside in 2020,” Ms Jones said.

“As an industry, we’re facing incredible challenges at the moment.

“That’s why it’s great to see so many of our event organisers and tourism operators thinking outside the box to find new ways to get their message out and stay connected with people.

“Not only will Bandwidth appeal to the festival’s already strong following – it will open this event up to thousands more blues fans online.

“The potential for this event to grow the festival and bring more tourists to the Gold Coast in years to come is huge.”

2020 Blues on Broadbeach Music Festival will be cancelled

There’s nothing we love more than seeing Broadbeach come alive and we couldn’t wait to present our 2020 festival to you this May. However, after exhausting all options to postpone the event, the 2020 Blues on Broadbeach Music Festival will be cancelled.

This difficult decision is in line with the Queensland Government’s legislation and Federal Government’s ban on non-essential mass gatherings, as well as the new international travel restrictions, making it impossible for the event to go ahead in 2020.

Whilst every person involved with this fantastic free festival would have loved for it to go ahead, the safety of patrons, musicians, crew and wider community comes first.
“Not being able to share our city and love of music with thousands of fans will be a strange feeling come May, but we will be inviting everyone back to the 20th-anniversary party in 2021,” said acting CEO, Mark Duckworth.

“Blues on Broadbeach has been a magnet that has drawn a community together on the Gold Coast for the past 19 years, so the decision is devastating for us all. To everyone involved, behind the scenes from artists to crews from hotels to coffee shops we send our support for the challenges facing our industries in the coming months”.

Roll your Accomm’ to 2021

He added “To support the local Broadbeach precinct, we recommend fans roll their 2020 flights and accommodation bookings to 2021 and come celebrate the 20th anniversary Blues on Broadbeach”

Following its mammoth first line-up announcement, Blues on Broadbeach adds a little G. Love and 25 more acts to its Lineup giving fans the chance to catch more than 200 hours of live entertainment for free across 20 performance areas.

Welcome back Black Sorrows

Returning to headline the 2nd line-up is THE BLACK SORROWS fronted by ARIA Hall of Famer Joe Camilleri. The Black Sorrows continue to be one of Australia’s most prolific and enduringly popular bands and a festival favourite. Renowned for their high-energy live shows, musicianship and infectious rootsy rhythms, The Black Sorrows through various incarnations, have not stopped performing or recording since Joe formed the band in 1984.

Blues on Broadbeach adds a little G. Love

Joining The Black Sorrows is US artist G. LOVE (pictured) who is set to entertain with his eccentric personality and quirky hybrid of hip-hop blues. His latest album, The Juice, was co-produced and co-written by five-time Grammy Award-winner Keb Mo. G. LOVE is a genre-defying artist who offers a distinctly modern pop spin on traditional blues, mixing programmed beats and hip-hop grooves with blazing guitar and steel.

For the third year, Memphis Tourism is partnering with Blues on Broadbeach and is bringing a very classy act direct from Memphis with DON BRYANT AND THE BO-KEYS set to take the stage this year. Don Bryant (above) and his eight-piece band will keep the spirit of classic Memphis alive as they epitomise the best of blues and soul.

“As the home of blues, soul, and rock n’ roll, the partnership between Memphis Tourism and Blues on Broadbeach is one with undeniable synergies,” said Director Australia/New Zealand of Memphis Tourism, Chris Ingram. “The city of Memphis continues to foster and support blues artists around the world, and Blues on Broadbeach provides the perfect local stage for a host of international artists all just as committed to the genre.”  He added “In partnership with United Airlines and Love Police Touring, Memphis Tourism will this year bring soul icon Don Bryant to Australia for the event along with the incredible Bo-Keys, and the appearance of these living legends will no doubt thrill long-standing blues fans, as well as inspire the next generation.”

Also joining the diverse line-up is Sydney-based BOOTLEG RASCAL whose eclectic combination of hip hop, reggae, indie-rock, dub and electronica is reminiscent of Gorillaz, Kid Cudi, and Massive Attack. Bootleg Rascal traverse the globe playing sold-out shows in France, UK, Netherlands, Germany, New Zealand, Australia, and the USA.  Returning to Blues on Broadbeach after blowing audiences away last year is TAMI NEILSON  who has been described as a “fire-breathing belter” by Rolling Stone. New fans will be super impressed by Tami’s voice which comes straight from the golden age of soul, country and rockabilly music, and has seen her win ‘Best Female Artist’ at the New Zealand Country Music Awards in 2010, 2011 and 2014.

Kim Churchill brings The Bright Night Sessions to Blues on Broadbeach

Kim Churchill is bringing his latest tour, ‘The Bright Night Sessions‘ to Blues on Broadbeach.

The Bright Night Sessions are all about reconnecting with all of the phenomenal, regional music communities that Kim has had the pleasure of joining over the years in Australia.

Partnering with Yamaha Australia and Undercover Creative, Kim has built a solar powered touring stage and production that can go, quite literally, anywhere. The Bright Night Sessions takes music into towns and communities, not requiring a live music venue.

A traveller as much as an artist, Kim Churchill has lived on the road for years, last appearing at Blues on Broadbeach in 2013, however it was no longer enough just to pass through; for Kim it was time to show that world in his songs.

‘After The Sun’, the warm, loping first single from a project where each song taps into the people and environments of some of his favourite parts of the world, is Kim showing the value of a new way of thinking, of writing … of living.

“I now understand the effect that the whole process of travelling has on the way I write songs and the way I create,” he says, explaining that he travelled this time intending to experience “emotional responses to a constantly changing environment” and allow that to “seep into my creative process, which has been the most liberating part of the last year of writing.”

Just as the lyrics of ‘After the Sun’ play with the idea that it’s a futile exercise to try and chase the sun, Kim saw the way nature swallowed disused buildings, art and colour and life finding their way back into these sterile, concrete structures.

“That’s really inspiring for me,” Kim says, “that the beautiful creative side to our DNA, that we just don’t understand, finds a way to come out again and again.”

KIM’S PREVIOUS BLUES ON BROADBEACH EXPERIENCES

Kim recently told Australian Musician “I played Blues on Broadbeach way back in 2012, 2013. I played there two years in a row and I had a phenomenal experience”.

He added “They are great supporters of up and coming blues and roots artists and you just know that if you play there you are going to see all of your friends and the opportunity to spend time with each other and play music with each other. So yes, I had a couple of really beautiful years going to that festival and it will be lovely to be back”

DON’T MISS A BEAT

Don’t miss Kim Churchill’s performance at Blues on Broadbeach.  In fact, come and stay the weekend in Broadbeach and you’ll have plenty of chances to see him and over 70 other international and local performers in the 2020 Blues on Broadbeach lineup.   Check out some of the 4-5 star accommodation options we recommend for Blues on Broadbeach.

Tommy Emmanuel voted best acoustic guitarist in the world today

Fellow musicians have voted Tommy Emmanuel as the best acoustic guitarist in the world today and we’re not surprised at all.  Only a few weeks ago Tommy was revealed as part of the lineup in our first artist announcement for the 2020 Blues on Broadbeach Music Festival.

Long recognised as as the international master of the solo acoustic guitar, Tommy plays hundreds of sold-out shows every year from Nashville to Sydney to London. Commanding  much respect from music fans and fellow musicians, according to MusicRadar, over a third of the votes were cast for Tommy.

In January 2019, he released Accomplice One, an album of collaborations with some of the finest singers, songwriters and, yes, guitarists alive today – a list including Jason Isbell, Mark Knopfler, Rodney Crowell, Jerry Douglas, Amanda Shires, Ricky Skaggs, J.D. Simo, David Grisman, Bryan Sutton, Suzy Bogguss and many more.

Since he and his brother Phil taught themselves to play as toddlers, the guitar has been Tommy’s real first language–and he’s more articulate on his signature Melbourne-made Maton acoustics than most people are with words. Influenced by the Merle Travis/Chet Atkins finger-style of guitar picking, Tommy developed a style of solo guitar playing that encompasses the range of a whole band– covering drums, bass, rhythm and lead guitar and a vocal melody simultaneously. No loop pedals, no overdubs, just one man and ten fingers. While some artists take ten-piece bands on the road and still fill out the sound with backing tracks, Tommy builds a complete sonic world entirely on his own.

For many players, the technical mastery of the technique would overwhelm the emotion of the music, but not for Tommy. His idols are not just the great players, but also the great pop songwriters and singers–Stevie Wonder, Billy Joel, Paul Simon, The Beatles and their ilk.

While thousands of fans have spent years trying to unpack and imitate Tommy’s technique, for him it’s just the delivery system. His approach is always song and emotion first, his music the embodiment of his soulful spirit, sense of hope and his love for entertaining.

With over a third of the participating musicians voting for Tommy Emmanuel as the best acoustic guitarist in the world today, you’d be mad to miss this legendary performer at the 2020 Blues on Broadbeach Music Festival.  Check out the 4-5 star accommodation options available and come and stay for the whole festival.

Gaby Moreno to play at Blues on Broadbeach in 2020

Blues on Broadbeach can’t wait for Latin Grammy Award winner for Best New Artist, Gaby Moreno, to play at our music festival for the first time in 2020.

Amongst her many accomplishments, Gaby Moreno has an Emmy nomination under her belt and has performed, toured or recorded with the likes of Bono (U2), Andrea Bocelli, Punch Bros, actor/singer Oscar Isaac, Ani DiFranco and Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings. Her single Fuiste Tú (a duet with Ricardo Arjona) has amassed over 850 million views on YouTube.

Gaby’s new album Spangled is a stunning collaboration with music legend Van Dyke Parks. The lead single from Spangled, Across the Borderline, is a duet with Jackson Browne.

A festival favourite across America, Latin America and Europe, Gaby’s unique vocals cover a range of genres from folk to blues to operatic rock.

An accomplished guitarist, Gaby has previously visited Australia with actor/musician Hugh Laurie (House/Veep). She is also a featured performer for concerts in memory of David Bowie at the Sydney Opera House and QPAC backed by members of Bowie’s original band. Locally, she has shared the stage with Bernard Fanning (Powderfinger), Sarah Blasko and Paul Dempsey (Something For Kate).

Gaby sings the theme song for the Disney series Elena Of Avalor and voices an animated character for the show. She wrote the theme song for Parks and Recreation and her singing has featured on popular TV shows including Family Guy and Orange Is The New Black.

Don’t miss the incredibly talented Gaby Moreno play at Blues on Broadbeach.  If you come and stay the weekend in Broadbeach you’ll have plenty of chances to see her and over 70 other international and local performers.

Check out some of the 4-5 star accommodation options we recommend for Blues on Broadbeach here.  All are in walking distance of the festival.

Her first blues/soul band at 16 called ‘Karise Eden & The River shack Band’ in Patonga, NSW. At age 19, auditioned for The Voice Australia, taking out the title of the 1st winner of the Australian TV Series.

Karise has topped the Australia music charts, winning ARIA awards, has double-platinum, platinum & gold-selling singles & albums – also breaking the record since The Beatles to have the most singles on the Australian ARIA chart in the top 10 at one time.

Karise is also quite the songwriter, an honest one at that, her original works full of depth & life experience.

She has travelled through Australia, UK & USA to pen some of these beautifully honest original works that you will hear in the last 2 albums. In the years since, Karise continues to sing, travel, write music and play to her audience while maintaining a solid home life with her son and husband.

Live, you can expect to hear Karise sing some old favourites from her time on The Voice Australia and original pieces from her albums “Things I’ve Done” & “Born To Fight”.

Karise is a great storyteller & mixture of all things music! With her on stage banter, stories, cheek and humour – you never know what will come next! It’s why Blues on Broadbeach is delighted that Karise Eden joins the lineup in 2020.

It’ll be a great night and celebration of music never to be forgotten so make sure you’re in Broadbeach, May 14-17, 2020.  Broadbeach 4-5 star accommodation options are located on the Blues on Broadbeach website

Canned Heat turned up the heat at 2019 Blues on Broadbeach

Global blues phenomenon Canned Heat turned up the heat at Broadbeach last night to close out the mighty Blues on Broadbeach Music Festival where they were joined by Australian blues royalty Kevin Borich for their finale song. Their incredible performance left crowds with no doubt they are still one of the finest blues bands of all time, a testimony to why they are on the Woodstock 50th Anniversary wish list in 2019.

Canned Heat closed out Blues on Broadbeach with huge crowds filling the streets

Early indicators suggest that attendance this year has risen by an estimated 10 percent from the 171,000 who attended last year. With the 2018 festival providing a $21 million boost to the local economy, this figure is expected to increase this year due to the growing number of patrons.

This year’s event saw more international acts in the line-up than ever before, with artists from the USA, UK, Canada and NZ describing this as a must-do event on their global touring calendars due to the vibrant atmosphere, huge numbers, loyal fans, and friendly locals that bring the event together each year. Click here to see some of the action.

Blues on Broadbeach has grown to become one of the largest music festivals in Australia and provides a huge boom for local businesses, with accommodation occupancy at 90 percent before the event began on Thursday. Cafes, bars and restaurants were packed throughout Broadbeach as patrons enjoyed the spoils of this sophisticated music festival.

“It has been quite extraordinary to experience the wonderful relaxed vibe of the festival with the fans commenting how special this festival is,” said Broadbeach Alliance CEO, Jan McCormick. “Every year we carefully plan our line up and the experience the fans will have when they come and in 2019 the team really nailed it.”

This festival contributes to the local economy significantly. The festival alone employs 250 crew and imagine the numbers of additional employee hours that are generated by the restaurants, accommodation and retail outlets, some of which traded well into the nights. Crowds gathered in the night at the Lendlease Park stage

Kicking off proceedings of the four day event on Thursday morning with huge crowds was the energetic soul/blues force of The Lachy Doley Group, led by Lachy Doley who has been dubbed the Jimi Hendrix of the Hammond Organ. The energy escalated over the four days with US blues legends like Chris Cain, Eric Bibb and Cedric Burnside as well as local favourites including The Bamboos and Harts captivating audiences with their heartfelt, upbeat and inspiring take on the blues.

Last night’s line-up included Kevin Borich who has over 40 years touring under his belt and had the crowd primed and pumped at The Star Stage on Surf Parade, ready for US headliners Canned Heat where Borich joined them for their final song.

Kevin Borich warmed crowds up before Canned Heat performed

With some of the most well-respected and notable blues musicians filling the sunny streets, restaurants, parks and bars with incredible tunes, both locals and visitors had an amazing experience, as did our international musicians.

But hey, don’t take our word for it…let’s hear from the people that matter!

The happy music fans who travelled from near and far:

A four-day music smorgasbord!  Great venues, production team, bars and cafes…and world-class performers sharing their passion with all ages.  Fun and free!  I’ve been every year…see you next year! Pam Foster (Tugan, QLD)

What a fantastic festival of all types of music. I enjoyed every moment. The quality of musicianship was incredible and extremely awesome to me and my many NZ friends who travel here to have fun and soak up the very infectious atmosphere. The organisers need credit for the selection of artists, the timings and venues…see you next year! John Bell (Queenstown, New Zealand)

Our ‘first timer’ international artists:

“Blues on Broadbeach is such a different festival, it’s so sophisticated and has this really luxurious edge to it. What an incredible thing to have, a free festival, to draw people to such a beautiful spot. And that’s a lot different to any festival that I’ve ever performed at anywhere in the world.” Tami Neilson (NZ)

“Blues on Broadbeach was one of the most beautiful experiences I’ve ever had at a festival. To walk on a stage and see so many smiling faces is something I will never forget, and the treatment of the individuals that were playing was beautiful.” Chris Cain (USA)

Broadbeach retailers who’ve been run off their feet:

This second line-up features incredible Canadian musician BAHAMAS who has opened for well-known musicians like The Lumineers, Jack Johnson, and Robert Plant and has four successful albums under his belt. Huge international acts set to perform at 2019 Blues on Broadbeach Festival

Fresh off the back of the Queensland Tourism Awards held last Friday night where Blues on Broadbeach took home the silver award for Major Festivals and Events 2018, Broadbeach Alliance is proud to announce the Blues on Broadbeach Music Festival International acts and local talent who feature in the first line-up for 2019.

Top local and international acts will hit the stages at 2019 Blues on Broadbeach Music Festival

The Multi-award-winning Blues on Broadbeach Music Festival is returning for its 18th year with top local and international acts you don’t want to miss. The much-loved festival has grown to become one of the largest music festivals in the country, being hailed as a sophisticated music event like no other. Enjoy a complete destination experience that allows you to listen to diverse blues tunes while relaxing in upscale restaurants and staying in a plethora of accommodation choices. All of this with the stunning Gold Coast beaches as your festival backdrop makes Blues on Broadbeach one of a kind.

“Blues on Broadbeach has evolved to take top billing on the national blues calendar … an event not to be missed,” says Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate. “What amazes me is the ability for the event to attract the world’s best musicians while still retaining its earthy, raw feel. Even more impressive is that the entire weekend is free.”

The first line-up includes six international acts as well as 11 stellar Aussie artists, with many more still to be announced.

Blues on Broadbeach Festival International Acts

Bringing Woodstock to the Gold Coast and performing for the second time at Blues on Broadbeach is international sensation CANNED HEAT who has collaborated with top artists including John Mayall, Little Richard and John Lee Hooker. The band represent a historical time in popular music and achieved several worldwide hits, including Going Up The Country and On The Road Again.

Canned Heat’s ‘Fito’ and Larry said, “It’s great to be ‘On The Road Again’ and returning to Blues on Broadbeach. We really love Australia and look forward to playing for that great audience!” Come and boogie with Canned Heat!”

Another top act from the USA who brims with blues cred is 2018 Grammy Award nominee ERIC BIBB who preserves the best of pre-war blues through his unique music that glides seamlessly between genres. Bibb is an activist who centres his values on the civil rights movement of the 60s, and uses his unique music to entertain, educate and motivate listeners to form a better world.

The diverse and wonderfully curated 2019 Blues on Broadbeach line-up also boasts funk-soul band THE BAMBOOS who have received five ARIA nominations and three APRA Songwriting Award nominations. They recently released their eighth studio album called ‘Night Time People’ which “hits the sweet spot in every sense of the word” according to British music magazine Blues & Soul.

Returning next year is HARTS, who is making good after his 2017 scheduled show had to be cancelled due to rain and is stepping up from a three-piece band to a much larger production which will include a full brass section. He has been compared to icons like Prince and Jimi Hendrix due to his unique blend of funk, jazz, blues, psychedelic rock, and indie electronic. Earlier this year, renowned American rapper Joey Bada$$ recruited Harts to play guitar for his performance on Triple J’s ‘Like a Version’, leaving his fans eagerly awaiting his performance next year.

Audiences will be blown away when they hear the soulful voice of New Zealand songstress TAMI NEILSON who has won the Tui Award for each of her past four albums as well as the 2014 APRA Silver Scroll. Nick Bolinger of NZ National Radio has described Neilson as “A red-hot honky-tonker, somewhere between Patsy Cline and Wanda Jackson with perhaps just a little bit of Peggy Lee sophistication.”

Rounding out the international offering is the ERIC STECKEL BAND from the US. A regular visitor to our shores, this will be Eric’s first time at Blues on Broadbeach, although he has left audiences in 25 countries mesmerized with his incredible guitar shredding. A true virtuoso!

Chris Cain (US) offers up real deal blues that are uniquely his own. In the words of Joe Bonamassa “One of my favourite, and criminally underrated blues players of all time…killer voice and songs to boot.”

Lachy Doley is the most celebrated Blues Soul Rock Organ Player in the world, hailed by Glenn Hughes from Deep Purple as being ‘the greatest living keyboard player in the world today’. Blues on Broadbeach will get the chance to see this great soul/blues act before they head off for their next European tour.

Festival Director Mark Duckworth said, “We’ve curated such a wide scope of Blues, Soul and Funk performers for the 2019 program reaching from home soil to New Zealand and the UK to the US. This year’s festival is so varied and unique, be prepared for a lot of brass and a lot smiles.”

Blues on Broadbeach is expected to draw huge crowds after the 2018 festival saw over 170,000 people at the exciting four-day music festival. The festival is presented by Broadbeach Alliance and led to a huge $21 million economic boost in 2018.

Five international acts to perform at award-winning 2018 Blues on Broadbeach

Seventeen years after its humble beginnings, the multi-award-winning Blues on Broadbeach Music Festival has grown to become an event of international standing, boasting a stellar local and international line-up, and what’s more…it doesn’t cost a cent to attend. That’s right – it’s completely free.  The May 2018 event features a packed line-up including five international acts to perform alongside more than 20 Australian favourites, with more still to be announced.

The award-winning Blues on Broadbeach continues to showcase the best of internati0nal and local Blues talent

Five-time Grammy Award winner and Blues Hall of Famer ROBERT CRAY will be returning to Australia with his band after more than a decade. During the 90s the Cray Band was featured in concert with artists like Eric Clapton, The Rolling Stones, John Lee Hooker, BB King and Bonnie Raitt, who declared that the band puts on one of the best shows you’ll ever see. “It’s been a while since we’ve been Down Under,” Cray said, “We’re really looking forward to coming back.” Included in this massive line-up, Blues on Broadbeach is pleased to present recent Stax Records signees SOUTHERN AVENUE, in partnership with Memphis Travel. Hailing from the home of the Blues, they have been lauded ‘the most talked about band in Memphis’, and are visiting Australia for the first time to perform exclusively at Blues on Broadbeach.

The sounds of Memphis

Chris Ingram, Director of Memphis Travel, said, “From the home of the Blues and birthplace of Rock ‘n’ Roll, I am proud and excited that we will be partnering with Blues on Broadbeach in 2018 and look forward to bringing to Australia from Beale Street, Memphis, the sounds of SOUTHERN AVENUE. The city is an authentic and vibrant destination characterised by music and mouth-watering barbecue, and is full of one of a kind experiences. We look forward to sharing with you the sound and flavour of Memphis.”

Another act visiting from the USA are blues-infused rockers KID CONGO AND THE PINK MONKEY BIRDS. A founding member of The Gun Club, and erstwhile guitarist for legendary psycho-billy purveyors The Cramps, as well as Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds, the legendary Kid Congo Powers has garage blues punk swagger in spades. After selling out rooms across the country on visits in 2015 and 2016, Kid Congo and the band are bringing their mix of fuzz guitars, New Orleans drum beats and bass lines dripping with soul to Blues on Broadbeach 2018.

Tourism and Events Queensland (TEQ) Chief Executive Officer Leanne Coddington said the event will host a world-class lineup. “The announcement of the five international acts will have broad appeal for next year’s festival, as well as showcasing great quality local acts,” Ms Coddington said. “The atmosphere of this event is always fantastic and TEQ is proud to support it as part of our It’s Live! in Queensland events calendar.”

The 2018 festival is also hosting another special event, with proud partner The Star Gold Coast offering blues fans a free and exclusive concert, with the chance to get up-close and intimate with music legend JON STEVENS. The New Zealand star, formerly of Noiseworks, Jesus Christ Superstar and INXS fame, has recently teamed up with Dave Stewart from Eurythmics to record his new album, Starlight.

Local artists join the five international acts to perform

Following packed out concerts for Diesel and Russell Morris for the 2016 and 2017 festivals, The Star is excited to once again be hosting the free event with JON STEVENS taking the stage in the Theatre on Friday, May 18. While the concert is free, seating will be allocated with ticketing information to be released in the new year.

The line-up also includes iconic Australian rock band THE SCREAMING JETS, playing on the Surf Parade Stage on the Saturday night of the festival. The band boasts three ARIA top five albums, as well as featuring one of Australia’s most talented and best-known guitarists, Jimi Hocking.

Festival Director Mark Duckworth said, “It’s great to see how much the Blues on Broadbeach Music Festival has progressed. The program continues to expand with more international acts, and venues like The Star contributing to the festival’s growth.” With more than 161,000 visitors last year, the event provided a $20 million economic boost to the region, as well as winning ‘Best Regional Event QLD’ and ‘Best Tourism Event QLD’ in 2017.

More acts added to Blues on Broadbeach 2017 Lineup

More than 35 Australian and International Blues acts have been added to the already impressive 2017 Blues on Broadbeach Music Festival lineup, which will feature UK superstar Bonnie Tyler, Australian legend Ian Moss and rockabilly king Slim Jim Phantom Trio.

The 2017 Blues on Broadbeach lineup features 70 acts

Now in its 16th year, multi award-winning Blues on Broadbeach is one of the largest free music festivals in Australia, entertaining locals and visitors with almost 70 acts on 20 stages. Situated on the picturesque Gold Coast, the event draws more than 160,000 visitors over its four days, with numbers growing every year. JIMI HOCKING’s BLUES MACHINE, HARTS, LOUIE SHELTON BLUESLAND, 19 TWENTY and AARON WEST & THE CUSTODIANS are just some of the exciting Blues names that fans can expect to see when Blues on Broadbeach rolls around May 18-21.

Broadbeach Alliance Chief Executive Officer Jan McCormick says the team are ecstatic with how this year’s Festival is shaping up, and are looking forward to making a few more announcements as the Festival gets closer. “We are extremely proud of this brilliant line-up. We have international stars performing, local home-grown talent, and I’m confident to say that when you come into the Festival, you will be absolutely blown away with the artists on offer,” McCormick said. “Visitation numbers are increasing every year and we are expecting this trend to continue, with thousands of people already travelling from interstate and overseas for the event,” she continued. Queensland Minister for Tourism and Major Events Kate Jones said the calibre of performers will be a huge drawcard for visitors. “The Blues on Broadbeach Music Festival is a highlight on Queensland’s calendar of events,” Ms Jones said. “Last year’s event delivered an economic boost of around $20 million into the Gold Coast economy and this year is set to be even bigger.” “I congratulate Tourism and Events Queensland (TEQ), Broadbeach Alliance and the event partners for bringing this highly successful festival to the Gold Coast.”

Homegrown talent, Jim Hocking

Jimi Hocking, an incredible home-grown blues artist, began his affinity with the guitar as a child, when his father presented him with his first acoustic guitar for Christmas. Since then Jimi has rarely put a guitar down, especially in his time as the lead guitarist for the Screaming Jets in the mid-90s. After much success, Jimi released his first blues album, ‘Blue Guitar’ which sells as well today as it did in 1999. Having played festivals around the world and won countless awards, Jimi will bring his incredible talent to Blues on Broadbeach in 2017.

A nod from the late great Prince

The late and great Prince saw something special in Darren Hart, known as Harts. The music icon flew Harts out to his Studios in Minneapolis to play with him, saying, “He reminds me of how I was at that age”. The Melbourne musician, singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, composer and music producer is often labelled as ‘a one-man music-making machine’ – he creates all his music single-handedly in his bedroom studio. Harts has become known for his Jimi Hendrix-like guitar playing and unique blend of funk, pop, rock and soul music, which has earned him praise worldwide.

Locally based, US musician Louie Shelton Bluesland will bring his wealth of experience to the 2017 Festival. An inductee into the Musicians Hall of Fame and Museum and the Arkansas Entertainers Hall of Fame, Louie has worked with the likes of The Monkees, Marvin Gaye, Simon and Garfunkel, Stevie Wonder, The Jackson 5, Neil Diamond, John Lennon and Barbara Streisand. He also played the guitar solo on Lionel Richie’s hit ‘Hello’. Don’t miss Louie Shelton Bluesland.

Also joining the line-up and bringing his electrifying show to Broadbeach is multi-award winning, Darren Jack Band. Adding a touch of magic and millions of YouTube hits to the Festival will be musical virtuoso, Juzzie Smith, best known for his amazing ability to play guitar, harmonica and percussion at the same time. Riff and groove-based blues band 19- Twenty will whip the crowd into a frenzy, while the incredible Aaron West & the Custodians and Benny D Williams will showcase what the locals have to offer.

Rounding out the second announcement for the 2017 line-up are Mojo Webb Band, Asa Broomhall, Nick Charles, Phil Barlow and the Wolf, Matt Stillert, Devils Kiosk, Tomcat Playground, West Texas Crude, Byron Short and The Sunset Junkies, Wards Xpress, Mitch King, Bag O’Nails, BB Factory, Kenny Slide, Richie Langford, Pop Standen and Dave Hoffman, Captain Dreamboat, The James Street Preachers, River City Aces, Tim Griffin, The Wet Fish, Johnny Devilseed, Kniki and Mike Beale, The Jacky Howellers, Mescalito Blues, Jason Delphin Music, Brad Palmer Blues Sessions and Wilson and White.

The Blues on Broadbeach Music Festival is supported by the Queensland Government through TEQ’s It’s Live! In Queensland major events calendar and will present four massive days and nights of Australian and International Blues acts from May 18-21 this year.

International superstar BONNIE TYLER will headline the impressive list of Blues performers which also includes Australian legend IAN MOSS, US act SLIM JIM PHANTOM TRIO, RAY BEADLE, KEVIN BORICH, and CASH SAVAGE AND THE LAST DRINKS.

Broadbeach Alliance Chief Executive Officer Jan McCormick said the team were busily putting the finishing touches on the event and told festival fans to expect even more surprises when further details on the full bill are released early next year. “We are extremely proud to announce this brilliant line-up, and I’m sure that this versatile group of artists will attract an enormous crowd to next year’s festival,” Mrs McCormick said. “Visitation numbers are increasing every year and we are expecting this trend to continue, with thousands of people already travelling from interstate and overseas for the event,” she continued.

SLIM JIM PHANTOM continues to inspire and excite audiences worldwide; with a sound, style and image that remains as fresh today as it ever was.
